The project, meticulously designed by Waterfrom Design, finally commenced in 2023, underscoring the power of shared understanding and an evolutionary design process.
The Patient Pursuit of a Vision: Curio Residence in Kaohsiung
In the vibrant city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, a remarkable architectural journey culminated in the completion of the Curio Residence in 2026. This interior design project, spanning an impressive 307 square meters, was brought to life by the renowned firm Waterfrom Design. The story behind this residence is not merely one of aesthetic and structural achievement, but also a testament to an extraordinary, two-decade-long professional relationship.
The collaboration between Waterfrom Design, led by Nic Lee and Elvin Ke, and their client began over twenty years ago. During this extensive period, the firm was commissioned to craft three distinct living spaces for the same client. However, when the client acquired a fourth property in 2015, the design process took an unexpected turn. After initial measurements were taken, the client requested a pause, seeking clarity and a deeper understanding of his personal vision for the new residence. This period of reflection lasted for several years, during which the client would quietly observe Waterfrom Design's evolving portfolio, fostering a sense of trust and anticipation.
The hiatus concluded definitively in 2023, when the client re-engaged Waterfrom Design, signaling his readiness to proceed. This patient, deliberate approach allowed for a mature and deeply personalized design, reflecting a profound understanding between the client and the architects. The lead team for the project included Nic Lee and Elvin Ke, with design contributions from Wesley Siow and Vincent Pan, and stunning photography by Studio Millspace.
A Testament to Patience and Evolved Design
The narrative of the Curio Residence offers a compelling lesson in the value of patience and the evolution of design. It highlights that truly exceptional spaces are not merely built but are grown, nurtured by time, understanding, and a profound connection between creator and inhabitant. This project reminds us that sometimes, the most significant achievements are born from a quiet, unwavering commitment to a shared vision, allowing ideas to mature and partnerships to deepen over many years.
